Why does Moses have two horns on his head?

The Moses sculpture with horns often features two horns on his head, which originated from the description of Moses meeting God on Mount Sinai in the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament of the Bible. In Exodus 34, when Moses communicated with God on the mountain, his face shone brightly. The original Bible says, “Moses’ skin shone brightly,” which means that Moses’ face became exceptionally bright due to the glory of God.

However, in the process of translating the Bible, some early Latin translations (such as the Latin Vulgate) mistakenly translated “glowing” as “horn”, resulting in Moses being depicted as having horns. This misconception is widely used in art history, especially during the Renaissance when Michelangelo’s Moses sculpture with horns adopted this image. Therefore, Moses’ “horn” actually symbolizes the reflection of divine radiance when he comes into contact with God, rather than the literal horn.
