Indian Hunter Sculpture Details Description:
The Indian Hunter sculpture is an outdoor bronze sculpture by John Quincy Adams Ward, located in Manhattan’s Central Park, New York. It was cast in bronze in L.A. Amouroux, New York, in 1866 and cost $10,000. It was exhibited at the Paris Exposition in 1867 and was later presented to New York City, where it was unveiled. February 4th, 1869. The statue was the first sculpture created in Central Park by an American artist at the age of 11. The Committee of Eminent Persons of New York commissioned Ward to create this work for the park, based on a smaller version he produced. When The Indian Hunter was dedicated to the park in 1869, it was lauded as an example of the American art form and contributed to Ward’s status as one of the most famous sculptors in the Country. Ward’s depiction was notable because it broke with the typical representational sculptural approach of the time, which represented idealized classical figures. To make the sculptures, Ward traveled to what was then the Dakotas to observe Native American life, attempting to represent his subjects with naturalism and emotion.
