Auguste Rodin The Shade sculpture is a highly expressive sculpture that showcases a complex emotion between power and compassion. A male body with strong muscles and smooth lines, but with his head lowered and his right arm weakly raised, as if covering himself or extending upwards with light. The entire posture exudes a heavy and oppressive aura, as if bearing the heavy burden of sin and fate, and as if sighing for the suffering of humanity. When Rodin created ‘The Shade’, he originally included it as part of ‘The Gates of Hell’, representing the confusion and pain of the soul at the entrance of hell. It symbolizes the powerlessness and contemplation of humanity in the face of fate and self, the posture of being pressed under the weight of existence, still attempting to reach out and touch hope, giving the work a strong philosophical and humanistic significance.
