He was the first, at the bottom of the steps into the primate house. It’s a man hugging a chimpanzee, an interesting theme. Apparently, Vierheller is often seen driving around in his convertible with a chimpanzee in the passenger seat. The George Philip Vierheller with his gorilla was unveiled in 1962 when Vierheller retired at the age of 82 and was carved by Richard Frazier. However, it has proved to be a controversial statue.
