A Hand Clutching a Ball Details Description:
The birthplace of Japanese baseball is no. 1 Middle School, the predecessor of the University of Tokyo. The origins of Japanese baseball began in 1872, when An American teacher, Horace Wilson, taught his students to play baseball. This happened in the Kummachi area of Kanda, Chiyoda-gu, where the Bachelor Hall is located. Today, the site features a statue of a hand clutching a ball. Shiki Masaoka, the haiku poet who first came up with the character combination that literally means “field ball,” graduated from Todai Yobimon, a preparatory school affiliated with the University of Tokyo, and later became Dai-ichi Koto Chugakko. He used this combination as his pseudonym, Noboru, which is a complex bilingual pun because the character can be transliterated as Noboru (” no “? Field, and “boru”? Ball). Many of the baseball terms he translated into Japanese are still widely used. Another University of Tokyo alumnus first translated the word “baseball” as “wild ball,” using the same characters.
